New Book of Text and Photographs Details Montserrat’s History, Beauty

Montserratians at home, those returning for the holidays, and others resident or visiting the island, will be given the opportunity to own a miniature version of Montserrat in print!

That's because the recently published book, "MONTSERRAT & Montserratians," a photo exploration of the island commemorating 10 years living with the Volcano, (1995 -2005), was officially launched on Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at the Vue Pointe Hotel.

The book is a result of collaboration between the author, Russian-Canadian Igor Kravtchenko, who is presently visiting Montserrat, and well known author, poet, historian and academic luminary, Professor Sir Howard Fergus.

Sir Howard has written the history of the island in the first 15 pages of the book, giving details of the island's first inhabitants, the Taino Indians, and provides invaluable current information on the politics, economy, hotels and villas, volcano and nature, underwater, culture and sports that exist on the island.

The rest of the book is a 71-page display, of a colourful, highly artistic, creative and stunningly beautiful photo exploration of Montserrat.

Every facet of the island is captured in the photographs that evoke a thirst in readers to discover more of the island and to become intimately knowledgeable of the island's history and culture.

Director of Tourism Ms. Ernestine Cassell said the Montserrat Tourist Board fully supported of the book launch at the Vue Pointe Hotel, and will display all the Tourist Board's collateral materials that were developed over the past year to support the marketing of Montserrat within the tourism industry. The material include, brochures of Villa vacations, volcano adventure day trip, Montserrat-a Caribbean Treasure, spectacular by nature, the Montserrat Vacation Planner, nature adventures, and Holiday Montserrat.

Ms. Cassell also said that the author of the book, Mr. Kravtchenko, was on hand to autograph personal copies of the book for those persons who may wish to own a copy or give it as a present.
